The letter from Cattherine the great 1729-1796 says if Mennonites drained the swamp land and farmed there, they could farm forever and never be drafted into the military. [Amish, Mennonites, Hudderites, mine] The full title of the book is The Bloody Theater or Martyrs Mirror of the Defenseless Christians who baptized only upon confession of faith, and who suffered and died for the testimony of Jesus, their Saviour, from the time of Christ to the year A.D. 1660."<br /><br />The sad story behind this story is that the "infant baptizers" were the perpetrators jailing, torturing and burning the anabaptists at the stake. My neighbor is an Amish minister and shared his volume of this publication with me. He holds this book almost as important as the German Bible. He indicated to me that their history of martyrdom is why the Amish continue to remain separate. One observation, they put to shame our efforts at Christian Community and as you state "forgiveness".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
