Morning Thanks

Garrison Keillor once said we'd all be better off if we all started the day by giving thanks for just one thing. I'll try.

This morning, Highland.

Always a highlight, a trip out to the old place is better than anything we could do in class. I sometimes why I stay in the classroom at all when there's so much joy in heading out to the open sky and the yellowing fields of early autumn Siouxland. Kids love it. I hope they do today too.

Tomorrow I'll put up a picture. But today, it'll just be sweet to be alone, subdued, in all that vast expanse of creation. I'd be a far better person--a better human being, a better believer--if I spent more time in awe of a world that's so very close but hidden away by teeming busy-ness.

Anyway, in an hour and a half, I'll be off. I hope they like it, my students. They almost always do.

Aside from pavement...or lack thereof, the photo looks a lot like my memory of this year's RAGBRAI. Beautiful.
